Public artwork ‘Past/Present/Future’, commissioned by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts for Transit and Urban Design, Permanent Art Program, is installed at Beach 25th St, ‘A’ train station.

‘Past/Present/Future’ is inspired from Rockaway’s landscape where streets and buildings are framed by the continuous change of colors and textures of the open sky, the ocean, and the bay. The artwork consists of three multi-panel installations made of faceted glass. Vibrant colors from the natural environment are set in abstract shapes defining the urban and natural landscape evoking the Past; while Present filters through continues variations of light; and Future will alter the reflections on the artwork through the different levels of transparency in the glass. The powerful natural setting has been a witness of Rockaway’s life, and one of the reasons why many people have moved to the Peninsula in the last 150 years. During the latest period significant social and urban changes had happened. And, the people of Rockaway faced many challenges due to nature’s fury, disasters and urban changes, among others. Lopez’s artwork for Beach 25th St ‘A’ train station, honors those who have lived and live in Rockaway, for their tenacity and commitment to their community, by exalting the beauty of the place that have inspired them for years. As people from Rockaway may say: ‘Once you get sand in your shoes, you’ll come back.
